Sales of luxury homes at the very high end are starting to pick up along with the broader real estate market. The numbers around the country in most markets support this, and we’re getting plenty of anecdotal evidence in various cities.

In Fort Lauderdale, the homes at the high end in the $1 million and above range are starting to move briskly according to our sources. While many listings are still well off their inflated highs from the 2008 crash, prices have clearly bottomed and now there’s robust competition for some of the best properties. Cash buyers naturally have an advantage but it appears now is the time to become more aggressive if you’re in the market.

Things are also very hot at the ultra high end as well. In a recent article, Forbes addressed the era of the $100 million house.

Once the daydream of fantasy-prone sellers, the $100 million house is becoming, well, not commonplace maybe, but not so rare.”I’m at the point where I’m calling this a new category of housing,” says Jonathan Miller, chief executive of New York real estate appraisal firm Miller Samuel, Inc.”It is something that’s come of age in the past two years in response to global economic turmoil, where wealthy individuals are looking for ways to invest, and ultra-high-end real estate seems to be the asset of choice.”

Two U.S. homes have broken past the $100 million threshold since the real estate downturn: a $100 million château in Los Altos Hills, Calif. that changed hands in 2011, and a hilltop estate in nearby Woodside, which quietly went for a staggering $117.5 million in November. Eight more listed with asking prices of $95 million and above are on the sale block, while several others, like financier Gary Winnick’s Bel Air manse, Casa Encantada (reportedly available for $225 million), are supposedly being shopped around as unofficial “pocket” listings.

LaFerrari was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show and it’s making quite a splash. The name is a little odd, but the styling and performance of the brand’s new flagship supercar have certainly impressed most of the auto press. This new beast is the successor to the legendary Ferrari Enzo that was named after the company’s founder.

This is Ferrari’s first hybrid, and that alone makes it a fascinating leap forward. The HY-KERS “advanced hybrid system” was developed using Ferrari’s F1 expertise boosting performance and efficiency. The result is a 6.3-liter V12 engine with 789 horsepower combined with a 160-hp electric motor. The electric motor provides the muscle at low speeds, so LaFerrari can sprint to 62 miles per hour in under three seconds. This allowed the Ferrari engineers to optimize the gas motor for higher speeds, and the car achieves a top speed of 205 mph! It will be interesting to see how this hybrid design gets rolled out into Ferrari’s other models, along with how it impacts the ultra-competitive supercar category.

“We chose to call this model LaFerrari,” declared Ferrari’s President, Luca di Montezemolo, “because it is the maximum expression of what defines our company – excellence. Excellence in terms of technological innovation, performance, visionary styling and the sheer thrill of driving. The styling is also very aggressive as you might expect. The muscular wheelarches jump out right away, and they are described by Ferrari as “a clear nod to the gloriously exuberant forms of late-1960s Ferrari sports prototypes.” The body was “given a sculptural treatment heavily influenced by its clearly F1-inspired aerodynamics and a tail section that exudes uncompromising sportiness.” The overall look is a smashing success in my humble opinion.

The supercar’s chassis also features four different types of carbon-fibre, all hand-laminated and autoclave-cured in the racing department using the same design and production methods as Ferrari’s Formula 1 race cars.

Plus Buffett lords over all of it, as host, mascot and, most notably, target. Knocking the Oracle of Omaha out of the tournament is the poker equivalent of beating Jack Nicklaus at a charity closest-to-the-hole contest.

NSX Concept.

Acura unveiled the new NSX Concept last year at the 2012 Detroit Auto show, and this year they showcased an updated version of the concept vehicle as you can see in the gallery of photos above and in the video below. The new version of this supercar now has an interior but is still probably two years away from production. Acura is looking to communicate a supercar attitude and a high-tech feel, and they’ve certainly achieved that will this aggressive design.

The design concept for the car’s interior is founded on a “Human Support Cockpit” theme, a strong expression of Acura’s product direction focused on “the synergy between man and machine.”

“Consistent with the spirit of the original NSX, our intention is to support the psychological and emotional aspects of driving a super car at the limit, because we are insistent about delivering on the synergy between man and machine,” said Jon Ikeda, chief designer, Acura Design Studio. “Importantly, this will be true of all Acura vehicles moving forward.”

Acura also wants to combine its next-generation supercar capabilities with advanced environmental performance, so they announced last year that the Acura NSX will be powered by a mid-mounted, direct-injected V-6 engine mated to Acura’s Sport Hybrid SH-AWD (Super Handling All-Wheel Drive) system. This is an all-new, three-motor high-performance hybrid system that combines torque vectoring all-wheel drive with advanced hybrid efficiency through the use of three electric motors – one motor integrated with the V-6 engine and two motors driving the front wheels – along with an all-new dual-clutch transmission. The system enables instant delivery of negative or positive torque to the front wheels during cornering to achieve a new level of driving performance unparalleled by current AWD systems.

Acura will definitely get plenty of well-deserved attention for this update, and supercar enthusiasts will definitely be waiting impatiently for a chance to drive this beautiful beast.

Finally, in more good news for US manufacturing, the new NSX will be manufactured at a new production facility in central Ohio. We’re looking forward to it.
